Religion And Culture of Sherpa
All high Himalayan belt natives follow Tibetan Buddhism, like the Sherpa of Solu- Khumbu district. Worship the Lord Buddha and other famous Gurus and saints, of the Nyingma sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Nyingma is the oldest of the four major Tibetan Buddhist sects and was founded by Guru Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche.
All houses and villages are adorned with prayer flags, a gesture of goodwill, against evil spirits. The villages en route are lined with prayer walls, religious spinning wheels, and rocks inscribed with prayers. Most villages have a monastery, with the head lama or priests, and the Sherpa celebrates Losar (Tibetan New Year). Gyalbo Losar falls at the end of February or the first week of March, according to the Tibetan Lunar Calendar. Losar celebrates the birth anniversary of the supreme Lord Buddha in May.
